Prime Minister Theresa May says Britain is seeking an “ambitious” trade deal for both the UK and Europe once it exits the European Union, adding that she does not want to mimic the current arrangements.

Theresa May, who is currently in Bahrain for Gulf bilateral talks, insists she wants to see a strong European Union even once the UK departs.

“I’ve always said I want us to have a strong relationship with the EU, with the 27 members,” said the Prime Minister. “I think it’s in UK interests to have a strong EU and have a relationship with a strong EU.”

“Crucially this is not about how retain bits of what we’ve already got, but what our new relationship is, and I think our relationship is not the UK as a supplicant into the EU. I want the deal that’s right for the UK and for the EU.”

“And I’m ambitious in that, because I think it’s not just in our interests to have a good deal on trade with and operations within the single market, I think it’s in the interests of European businesses who want to have access to the UK market as well. So I’m ambitious that we can go out there and get that deal.”

It remains to be seen what the trade deal is, and how traders and wholesalers will be affected by Brexit. However, Theresa May’s comments which signify Britain’s aim for an ambitious trade deal is certainly positive.

Recently, the High Court ruled that Theresa May can’t trigger Article 50 herself to formally begin leaving the EU, and that Parliament must be consulted.
